Kim Garrett, MS, LPC, PMH-C
Hey there! I’m Kim, and I can’t wait to work with you.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas with over a decade of experience working in grief and loss. My helping journey actually began as a volunteer at a camp for grieving children, which sparked my passion for walking alongside others in their struggles.
After earning my MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Texas, I’ve since immersed myself in a variety of settings, from non-profit work helping cancer patients and their families, to guiding grieving children and adults, to cultivating my own private practice.
Becoming a mother (to twins, during the tumultuous year 2020 no less) sparked my dedication to perinatal mental health. I have been trained by Postpartum Support International (PSI) in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and received my Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C). I also serve as volunteer coordinator of specialty support for parents of multiples through PSI.
Whether you’re expecting, have recently welcomed a new baby, or are in the family planning trenches, I’m here to walk alongside you through the struggles and help you highlight the moments of joy. The transition to motherhood can be a rollercoaster of emotions, and it is my belief that acknowledging the hard parts can actually take away some of their power over us.
My personal journey has also included the loss of my brother nearly a decade ago. This solidified my passion for working with grievers of all kinds. While everyone’s grief is unique, my approach has been informed by personal experience, along with the feedback I’ve gathered working with grieving children, teens, and adults my entire career.
Outside of the therapy room, I will always be a summer camp kid at heart who finds magic in the great outdoors. I truly believe nature has healing powers and brings perspective into our lives, and I love weaving nature into my work.
I am here to walk alongside you through whatever life has thrown at you. Together in a non-judgmental space, with humor and compassion, we will unpack these difficult feelings.

Some facts about me:
Give me a good book, a rainy day, and a comfy couch and I will be my happiest self.
I don’t believe in the concept of guilty pleasures. Some of my greatest pleasures are romance novels, The Bachelor, and all things Taylor Swift.
I’m a mom to twin girls. I wouldn’t trade being a twin mom for the world; it has been the most challenging and rewarding experience of my life.
I love to be outside and dream of living in the mountains.
If I’m not working or with my kids, I am probably listening to an audiobook.
I also have the sweetest dog named Ellie, who I try not to let feel neglected since her human sisters came into the picture.
My Counseling Approach
I am not a fan of a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. Instead, I use an eclectic mix of techniques that are responsive to your specific needs. I pull from several proven methods, including Attachment Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS), to create a personalized experience that works best for you. I also enjoy incorporating different modalities outside of typical talk therapy, including walk and talk, mindfulness, and creative arts and music, as well as personality theories such as the Enneagram.
Ok, but what does all that mean?
Find a breakdown below of each of these components of therapy and how they might aid you in meeting your goals.
-
Attachment Theory helps us understand the bonds we create with others, from childhood on. By exploring these patterns, we can better understand how your past influences your current relationships. This insight will help us work on creating healthier, more secure and satisfying connections.
-
CBT focuses on the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and actions. We will work to identify unhelpful thought patterns and challenge them to create healthier behaviors. Together, we’ll look at what goes on in your mind when you’re feeling stuck, anxious, or down. By shifting those thoughts, we can create real, positive changes in your daily life.
-
IFS is a unique approach that views the mind as made up of different “parts.” You can think of these as little voices or sides of yourself, like your inner critic or the part that is constantly worrying. IFS helps us get curious about these parts and understand why and when they show up. We will work on healing the wounded parts of you and building a stronger, more compassionate inner world where all your parts can coexist peacefully.
-
No two people are the same, so your therapy shouldn't be either. My goal is to meet you where you are and tailor my approach to fit your needs. Whether it’s learning to quiet that self-critical voice, exploring how past relationships affect your current ones, or finding practical ways to cope with your current stress, we’ll work together to find methods that feel right to you.
